For (Some) Other Things, There's VISA

Tuition for a year at Zenith: $36,000

What forty students each paid in cash and loans for my lecture course: $4,500

Average sum spent on books for the course: $100

Look on my students' faces when I told them that I knew how hard they had worked all term and the final was optional:

Priceless.

Only $100 for textbooks? Guess you have a lot paperbacks. Textbooks are marked up more than crack. New editions are total scam, too.

I'm not teaching this term, but I know it's such a great feeling to be able to lift a burden (i.e. finals) from 20 or more folks at one time. Good picture! - TL

Nicely done. One of my professors let me (not the whole class) off a final after I did a spectacularly erudite, indigestible paper, based on foreign-language sources, for his two-term course. 38 years later I remember vividly how good that felt. Sounds as if you had one of those fabulous groups that come along every decade or so, and that you never forget.

Number of students who will take the optional exam? Zero, I hope! (unless some of them need another assignment to bolster their final grades?)

I have a friend, an Education Prof, who lists the "final as optional" announcement as one of the sure-fire ways to raise your evals. He didn't say how much FUN it is! :-)

There is a large variety of replica Panerai watches that are manufactured all around the world. It seems as if every country manufactures their own brand of watches these days. However, the best-made watches are still manufactured in Switzerland and Japan. It can change the way people see us - as well as the way we present ourselves to others.
