The best parties are often off-site: I've been to dos at the British Embassy, and at the Great Hall of the Smithsonian that were lots of fun.

My husband tells stories of the 1950s, when the big scholars trooped around the AHA with a bevy of graduate students behind them, pulling Mr. X (and it was almost always MR.) out of the group when they ran into someone from school Y which had a job.

When I was a young graduate student, I was introduced to great eminence in the profession at the AHA, and managed to impress him enough to consider me for a fancy job (that I didn't get, since I'd barely started writing my diss). It was, I realized, the best place to tell people what you were up to.

And for job candidates who are worried about what people will think if they socialize during the conference: it's possible to socialize without getting totally smashed.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-55084181444951703112008-01-02T12:50:00.000-05:002008-01-02T12:50:00.000-05:00Dear anonymous 11:34,Way to make all the people on...Dear anonymous 11:34,

Way to make all the people on the market incredibly tense! Seriously, in a group of 2000 people, the surveillance isn't so absolute, nor is it an especially good quality when a prospective hire has no sense of humor.

Good luck to you,

TRTenured Radicalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05703980598547163290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-14693850922892088022008-01-02T11:34:00.000-05:002008-01-02T11:34:00.000-05:00When you are on the job market, going out and drin...When you are on the job market, going out and drinking with new friends isn't the best way to make a good impression. All of those contacts will remember your social behavior, not anything professional about you. EVERYTHING you do counts during any job-related contact. Since interviews take place at AHA you would be better off considering the entire conference as one long interview and that shouldn't include partying the way most people party. How can it enhance your reputation as a scholar to be invited to view Dillinger's penis (whether you accept or decline the invitation). It shows you are not being taken seriously. Partying is for people who already have jobs -- not those trying to get one.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-47851863084377701022008-01-01T14:22:00.000-05:002008-01-01T14:22:00.000-05:00What good advice, too, for the MLA (or, I'd imagin...What good advice, too, for the MLA (or, I'd imagine, most professional conferences)--and thanks as always for the name-check & kind words.

I've a good friend who's a literaray scholar partnered with a historian, and I have to admit to being somewhat jealous that she gets to go to both conferences.Flaviahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17832765671541392835noreply@blogger.com
