As a chair, I would have to say that getting the whole group in a room and getting them to debate how to move forward on an issue is the only truly consultative way to work.

Sometimes we don't. And i would also say that running a good meeting is not a skill everyone has.

TRTenured Radicalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05703980598547163290noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-62672406196352680492008-02-29T22:43:00.000-05:002008-02-29T22:43:00.000-05:00Do you actually accomplish anything at these meeti...Do you actually accomplish anything at these meetings? If you think that's bad, try changing policy in a law firm. Yow! Some colleagues will try to be both "Lawyer for a Day" and "Academic for a Day." Then there's the related phenomenon of the lawyer who tries to make an argument based on the dictates of 'policy' in a court hearing. Within seconds, all eyes will start to roll -- beginning with those of the presiding jurist. Policy therefore seems to be a non-starter in several circles.

Thanks again for blogging.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-52074083755778074302008-02-28T09:48:00.000-05:002008-02-28T09:48:00.000-05:00Sis, those who know me realize that Mme. They can fulfill the "community-cohesion-building" work of the department and you don't have to conceal the fact that you are drinking.

(as opposed to a useful meeting that would teach me how to read Lacan without my eyeballs rolling into my skull.)

Nope, that is the correct way to read him. I recommend knitting: I'm not as good a knitter as one colleague, but I try to have a project I can do without paying too much attention whenever there is a meeting... Then if the meeting isn't productive, I can see that the scarf, or shawl, or whatever, has progressed nicely, and it's rather relaxing to sit and knit.

Of course, our faculty meetings are two day events...Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09716705206734059708noreply@blogger.com
