Hard to finish, but it does change one's perspective. If his medical condition was half as bad as it is portrayed here, it is hard to see how he could have completed (or maybe even run for) another term.JackDanielsBlackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17285871354441074406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-13084379366915182212009-07-21T16:29:28.371-05:002009-07-21T16:29:28.371-05:00The lawsuit-proofing you mention shouldn't hav...The lawsuit-proofing you mention shouldn't have been necessary, because the dead cannot be defamed. You may now publish a paper saying Robert McNamara screwed chickens and stole money, for example, and you'd escape the wrath of liability even though you'd be lying through your teeth.

So Ethel or the kids would have to show that the book made them--not just Bobby or Jack--look bad somehow. Of course, people do worry about being sued even when there's no grounds to sue them, and this family has been able to persuade many that they enjoy a little extra entitlement.LadyProfnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-28402232049108433362009-07-20T06:22:14.677-05:002009-07-20T06:22:14.677-05:00I heartily second Historiann's recommendation....I heartily second Historiann's recommendation. Curtis Sittenfeld is a great writer; I'm in the middle of _American Wife_ now and she does a great job of showing how Alice/Laura found herself married to somebody like Charlie/George, step by entertaining (and understandable) step.thefrogprincesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13370524947383102482noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-49374966287697262502009-07-18T12:59:51.833-05:002009-07-18T12:59:51.833-05:00I look forward to reading this book. Most of what you list as Jack's sexual foibles I have read elsewhere--and others besides, such as how one of his mistresses actually worked for the Mafia. As for brother Bobby, didn't I read in the paper recently that he and Jackie commenced having an affair right after John's death that lasted until Bobby himself was assassinated? Throw in Ted's foibles over the years, and it looks like the whole family was oversexed.

I have also read accounts of JFK's many medical problems. What I don't understand, having had fairly bad back problems off and on myself, is how he could have been such a sexual horndog with a bad back. Fellatio is one thing; actually performing, quite another. If he actually managed intercourse when his back was out, then he was a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

In any case, I'm pretty sure I will find this book interesting when I read it on my Kindle.JackDanielsBlackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17285871354441074406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-3486796223935820172009-07-18T12:11:49.167-05:002009-07-18T12:11:49.167-05:00Thanks for the warning on this book. I'm just sayin.')

One book I can recommend wholeheartedly to you and your readers that meets your test for quality historical fiction--although it's not terribly historical (yet)--is _American Wife_ by Curtis Sittenfeld. This book is written from the point of view of Alice Lindgren Blackwell, whose life is clearly modeled on that of Laura Welch Bush. This book was a revelation to me in that Sittenfeld managed to make 1) Alice/Laura a sympathetic character with a fascinating and compelling back story, and 2) the Charlie Blackwell/George Bush character seem like a sexy and fun boyfriend when they first met. (Imagine my surprise!) The scenes at the family compound (set not at Kennebunkport, Maine but in Dorr County, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan) were the most hillarious of the whole book, very evocative of the Bush's WASP-tacky style and manners.

Maybe try _American Wife_ to get the taste of _American Adulterer_ out of your mouth?Historiannhttp://historiann.comnoreply@blogger.com
