Kazin's piece is online at
http://www.dissentmagazine.org/article/?article=385, but I don't think Zinn's reply is on the website.Brian W. (posted here: bit.ly/co2zEG)

"Zinn wanted to write a people’s history because he believed that a national history serves only to justify the existence of the nation, which means, mainly, that it lies, and if it ever tells the truth, it tells it too fast, racing past atrocity to dwell on glory. Zinn’s history did the reverse. Instead of lionizing Andrew Jackson, he mourned the Cherokee. The problem is that, analytically, upending isn’t an advance; it’s more of the same, only upside-down."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-70108602006378512152010-01-31T15:41:59.476-05:002010-01-31T15:41:59.476-05:00Janice beat me to the Geoffrey Elton comment! I'm not sure I can buy such a perfectly wise and right-minded Cromwell (although Geoffrey Elton would approve), even knowing that it's fiction. Maybe I'll give in this summer and take a longer look.

Sad news about Zinn. I loved how his work not only inspired new perspectives in American history, but also in other national histories (such as with the People's History of Canada).Janicehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14093558563358431804noreply@blogger.com
