Sometimes, I wish they were.

You're also conflating cost centers with profit centers. Expanding Admissions or Development means increasing income to the university. To lump those together with true costs -- like expanding academic affairs -- distorts the picture.

As a dean, I smiled ruefully at your junior partner's notion that there's no cost to us to sending an email. Would that it were so! Any request I send generates pushback, whining, threats, grievances, and all manner of cost. That's not to say that all admin requests are valid, obviously. It's just to say that the Manichean view you're endorsing isn't reality.

I'm not trying to defend your administration -- I don't know which one it is, and it's certainly true that administrators are capable of being really awful. I'm just saying you're painting with a very broad brush.Dean Dadhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04956229655057842122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-36455287154899460422006-12-21T12:49:00.000-05:002006-12-21T12:49:00.000-05:00This is inspiring for someone who spent fruitless ...This is inspiring for someone who spent fruitless years pushing for a grad student union at INRU--and who encountered, even more than administrative resistance, the resistance of other grad students, who said, "well, we're lucky to be here, and we teach smart students, and we're living the life of the mind; yeah, I'd rather have more money/better benefits/more control over my teaching, but I don't want to make a FUSS about it." (Happily, I'm now at a unionized institution.)

Kudos to you and your fellow faculty members for pushing back. I'll be interested in hearing what happens.Flaviahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17832765671541392835noreply@blogger.com
