Perhaps they are even outrageously outmoded. Do not, however, express outrage / disbelief directly - you may hurt someone's feelings, for reasons you cannot imagine without knowing the last two decades of departmental history intimately. You can, however, speak up when someone has time by saying: "Is there a reason why X is done in Y way?"

You will thus be non-offensive, and you will likely get some variation on one of three useful pieces of information:

1. Yes. The reason is Z. Concensus is that Z is a strong reason to continue doing X.

2. Yes, the reason is Z, but that is not a good reason. Nobody really agrees with it, we just haven't changed it yet. Maybe we can all get it together and do something about it this year.

3. You mean there's another way to do it? That works better? Wow! Your messages are on the money!

Since I have been on my current job, I saw a departing prof host lunch for the entire support staff. I also helped organize funding for the staff to get short massages in our office. (I had heard of this in another office and decided to copy the idea!) It wasn't too expensive...$15-30 per staff member, depending on the length of the massage. It was a HUGE hit--with both sponsoring faculty and receiving staff--and I hope we do it every year!Lesboprofhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09249806181782620274noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36212542.post-72927985407103248392007-08-27T20:37:00.000-05:002007-08-27T20:37:00.000-05:00Thank you, thank you.AW and Sisyphus:Brilliant is ...Thank you, thank you.

AW and Sisyphus:Brilliant is a true compliment from the two of you.
